Stourport Regatta 2014 & Results

, ,

The threat of hurricane Bertha didn’t dampen the high quality racing at our home regatta at the weekend.  With clubs from all over the UK in attendance, racing was at the highest level of competitive rowing over the 1000m course.

The weather conditions were generally kind to the rowers and spectators after just a few rain soaked sessions, with competitors ranging from Juniors aged 12 to Masters, with many high status crews taking part. The big winners of the weekend were Worcester, Bristol, Liverpool Victoria and of course Stourport with 19 wins overall.

There were some notable wins for Stourport in their home regatta with Shauna McClaren and Lydia Chance winning the Womens J15 category, and a fantastic performance by Bruce McClaren to win in the J17 single scull event.

The new Champion of the Severn sprint event drew the biggest cheers from the spectators as Worcester RC sought revenge for their loss in the final against Stourport at the recent Bewdley Regatta. Worcester who had put in a huge effort over the first three quarters of the race held off a late charge from Quintin in a very tight finish to seal a thoroughly deserved win in the final of the short 500m sprint.

With Stourport’s 19 wins, this would have secured the Victor Ludorum, but being the home club and unable to take the trophy the honours belongs to Liverpool Victoria this year with 12 wins overall.

Winning crews were received by Stephen Williams, Mayor of Stourport, and presented with a special edition pot.

Stourport BC has received many messages of support for the organisation, hospitality and general welcome received throughout the weekend and the club wishes to thank the Members for their contribution to another successful regatta.
