Regatta Sponsorship 2018

Stourport Boat Club is now running the sponsorship packages for the 2018 regatta & sprint.

We offer excellent hospitality,  advertising opportunities, race sponsorship and an exciting weekend of racing.  It's a wonderful weekend for the town of Stourport, for rowers and their families and for local businesses and the event is well publicised in the local press.

As well as the athletes from the participating clubs, there will be a large number of supporters and we also expect to attract a significant number of local people to come and watch the racing.

A Flying Start For The Spitfire!

Stourport's brand new racing boat, Spitfire, took off at Evesham Regatta last weekend with a win for the Junior Squad in the WJ14 2x event with Lizzy Davis and Eleanor Jones. The boat was recently named to co-inside with the Royal Air Force centenary celebrations.

Over a successful weekend, Stourport came away with a string of nine wins in total. There were several notable performances, including a strong row in the Open double sculls event, where Sam Fuller and Matt Gould raced to a win against Upton after giving J18 Great Britain national hopefuls from Pangbourne College Boat Club a scare the previous day in a close race.

Former England rower Jane Ryman's successful weekend was secured with her third win in the W.MasD/E.1x event, beating strong opposition from Trentham Boat Club by three lengths.

Centenary Boat Naming for the RAF

Members and friends of Stourport Boat Club recently welcomed Wing Commander James Thorley to Stourport to celebrate with a special boat naming ceremony.
Over the past year, junior rowers and parents have raised funds to purchase a new racing boat, and to mark the occasion of the centenary of the Royal Air Force the boat was aptly named after the iconic Spitfire.
Wing Commander Thorley is the outgoing Chairman of the RAF rowing club and together with club member Jamie Wrafter, who is also a serving RAF serviceman, the naming ceremony was carried out with club President Pete Lashford.
In keeping with tradition, and a splash of champagne on its bow, the boat was officially named Spitfire by Wing Commander Thorley before its launch and a row-by in front of an admiring crowd on the banks of the River Severn.
Wing Commander Thorley commented, "Its a pleasure to visit Stourport Boat Club, and to be part of this very special occasion. My thanks go to all those who have supported the RAF in our special year, and with this boat naming its wonderful that we will have a long association with one of your boats"
The addition to the club fleet will support further regional and national success for Stourport's junior rowing squad.

Rowing Success at National Regatta

At the recent National Junior Inter-Regional Championships, Stourport Boat Club Juniors helped the West Midlands Squad into 3rd overall place, two places higher than last year.

Seven of Stourport's junior rowers were selected for the West Midlands Squad by racing in previous qualifying events. Elizabeth Davis and Eleanor Jones (WJ14 2x) secured their place with a superb row at Worcester in late March, competing against the top juniors in the region over two 800m sprints and winning with a time of 7.14, 24 seconds quicker than their nearest opposition.

At the Oarsport Junior Sculling Championships also held in March, at the 2012 Olympic rowing venue Eton Dorney, the WJ15 coxed quad crew of Annabelle Murphy, Molly Clarke, Sophie DiMambro, Christina Butcher and coxed by Harriet Murphy qualified after beating all other clubs in the West Midlands.

The Inter Regional Championships is contested between all of the 12 British Rowing Regions, racing over 1500-meters with the heats timed. The fastest 6 crews go through to the A-Final with the others into the B-Final, where both Stourport crews were successful in qualifying for the A finals.

Racing against the top juniors in the country, both crews rowed extremely well to qualify for the A finals later in the day. In 6 lane side by side racing, the WJ14 double crew came 4th and the WJ15 quad came in 5th position in the finals.
Using a points system, the West Midlands Squad improved last years overal position by 2 places, coming in 3rd behind London Thames and Thames Upper.

Jane Sullivan, West Midlands Junior Squad Manager, said

"Stourport junior rowers have performed suberbly at the Championships getting to the A finals and helping the Region to 3rd place in the Country, which is outstanding"
