Bewdley Regatta – Captains Report

Stourport Boat Club Win The Bewdley Mughouse Eights and 15 wins in total at Bewdley Regatta.

Clubs from all over the country entered the inaugural Mughouse eights a new event sponsored by the local pub. A prize fund of £450 pounds was on offer and amongst the top boats were Worcesters 1st eight, fresh back from Henley Royal Regatta.

Having won through 3 rounds in some closely fought contests the stage was set for the final; Stourport vs Worcester. The main regatta was put on hold whilst the event was run up stream to allow spectators to view the whole course. A huge crowd had gathered on both sides of the river to watch the spectacle where a top eight flat out over a short course is an awesome sight.

Our boys rowed brilliantly; they were clean and powerful with a very high rate of striking they roared past the Mughouse at over 45 strokes per minute. They went on to beat the Worcester boat by ½ length….well done boys and cox Leslie ! The Crew consisted Kev Stack at Stroke, Mat Brighton, Chris Bird, Nick Danby, Jo Stratton, Alex Barnett, Tom Dunkley Jones and Luke Barnett steered by Leslie Beddow.

We were successful at all levels at Bewdley Regatta from our youngest Juniors to our oldest Veterans. Our Junior 11 Quad (racing up a division to J12) won their event….well done to Annabelle and Harriet Murphy, Molly Clarke and Dan Glover ably coxed by Anna Jethwa.  Sam Branford and Callum O’Reilly teamed up with Hugo Walton and Mathew Gould coxed by Miranda Brookes had a great win.

Sam Branford and Callum O’Reilly got a hat trick of wins winning there main event both days the J14 double scull and the quad on Sunday.

Another win from our J16 girls in the Quad; very well done to Ella Shepherd, Frankie Ward, Paris Dangerfield and Harriet Blackmore.  Sian Hinton won J16 singles on both days with another great performance. On Sunday the girls J16 quad were again the victors this time with Beth Darby sitting in instead of Frankie Ward proving our strength in depth. Bruce McClaren who had rowed in senior events on Sunday and had some great racing was back in the single on Sunday, winning the IM3 event.

The girls won the J16 double sculls well done to Sian Hinton and Frankie Ward.

We had two mixed Masters eights racing a straight final with great club camaraderie displayed by these two crews.  It was a really close race with the crew consisting, Mark Tunley, Gary Howson, John Preece, Iain McClaren, Lyn Gavin, Lyn Wills, Jo Moraity, Roxy Rea and cox Katie Moraity just coming out on top. Well done all !

We also had two Masters Quads race a straight final with the crew of Pete Lloyd, Tony Price, keith Barwise and Richard Lloyd winning this one again; nice to see an all light blue final.

Pete Spencer won their Mas C pair on Saturday in another gutsy fight for the line they got the win. The Masters F coxed four won their event coxed by Leslie Beddow. Finally, Stew Barnett rowed superbly to win his Mas D sculls easily.

So a total of 15 wins and another successful weekend racing. We are now looking forward to our own regatta in two weeks time.
